Creep in Park Slope

After a late tea at my friend Bonnie's apartment, I headed back to my summer home. Bonnie does not live far---about 15 minutes away. It was 1:00 AM but Bonnie reassured me that the neighborhood was safe and it would be a nice stroll.

I pass people walking their dogs. Teenagers playfully fighting outside of Prospect Park. A couple canoodling by the Pavilion. I turn the corner onto my street. It's dark but lined with majestic lanterns in front of brownstone apartments.

I was admiring the scene when a man rides by on his bike. He leers at me over his shoulder and I switch my purse to the other arm. He lingers the rest of the block.  I pull out my cell phone, scroll to Bonnie's number and talk into the receiver loudly. He drops behind, keeping his gaze on me. I periodically glance back and increase my speed. A few minutes later, he passes me-staying on the left side. I cross over to the right. He pedals up and I see movement on the sidewalk ahead. He's now been following me for at least two blocks. I start walking in the street. I'm approaching the intersection when I see that he is off his bike and staring me down.

That's it.

"STOP LOOKING AT ME! STOP FOLLOWING ME" My hands are making big movements and my heart is pounding. He smiles. He has a dark complexion and buck teeth. He's short. I could probably put up a good fight but he's making me uncomfortable. He's TRYING to make me uncomfortable.

"STOP STARING AT ME!"  He continues to grin. I see two Americorps-looking gentlemen on the corner. I call out to them and ask if they could please walk me home. They abide and I calm down. We stop in front of my building and I look back. I can see the man in the distance, riding his bike.

I'll add this to my collection:
