Walnut Street

Here is a gripe about America: how is it that we can't come up with more original street or city names?

I've been entering addresses as part of a project for work. I can't tell you what a break from tedium it is when I enter something rather than Walnut Creek or Walnut Street or Big Walnut.

What is so great about walnuts that millions of streets have to be named after them? And do these streets even have walnut trees? Every time I enter an address with any sort of walnut reference I hear Jeff Foxworthy's voice say, "You might be a redneck if...your address has the word walnut in it."

Walnuts aside---does every city in the world need a Columbus Street? "Uhhh, me can't think of any other name, me thinks it should be Columbus Street, after that one fellar with three ships."

Speaking of cities...what in the hell does a city with a population of 115 in Southwestern Ohio by the name of Rome have in common it's namesake in Italy? I'll let you in on a little secret: NOTHING.

Another one--->my hometown of Athens, Ohio. Do we have ruins here in Athens? Do we have myths of Greek gods and goddesses? Nooooooo. Honestly, I can't think of one thing we have in common with Athens, Greece. Can you?

BUT one good thing about Athens: no Walnut Street.............right?

  1. I kicked a green walnut down the street a couple of times today when I was walking back from lunch. It took three kicks before I remembered your recent walnut gripes. I picked it up and brought it with me to the office so I could sit in your desk chair when you got up to go to the bathroom. You can imagine how bummed I was to find out you were gone. :(

  7. Did you know Seoul literally means "capital"? I guess I'm happy we don't call things "town" or "village" haha.

  9. Marseille,
athens wasn't always in ruins. it was the center of culture and education in the midst of some still barbaric shit. ohio university was supposed to be ohio's attempt at that...close, but not so much really
