I have encountered a wide range of reactions from Korean men, women and children. Here is a summary:
~Most kids say "hello" or "hi" and then run away laughing hysterically when I say hello back.
~Men ages 18-25 struggle between intrigue and disgust. "Pretty, white face but what is that huge bump below her back?"
~Women ages 18-25 want to be my best friend or my girlfriend. Seriously. Korean women want me.
~Men ages 40 & up are wild cards. I have met some older Korean gentlemen on the subway who are extremely talkative and welcoming. But I have also had interactions such as the following:
I was in my neighborhood walking down the street. It was evening and still light out. I saw an older man approach me. He starts saying "Hello, hello, hello, hello" so I finally said hello back. He then reaches over and shoves me with both of his hands.
~Women ages 40 & up are usually friendly. For instance, the following heart warmer:
I went to the gym the other day and when I came out it was raining pretty hard. I didn't have my umbrella so I sprinted home as far as the cross walk that takes forever to change. An older lady glared at me from under her umbrella as I crossed my arms and squinted to keep rain out of my eyes. Surprisingly, she then walked over and put her umbrella over my head. She said something I could not understand and I just took a guess it was "Where do you live?" I pointed in one direction and when the crosswalk sign turned green we walked together to the other side. Before I dashed away I said thank you in Korean and bowed a couple of times.
1) All women want you....not just korean, ha ha
ReplyDelete2) I can't believe a man shoved you, wtf!
3) what a sweet lady to walk you with her umbrella, I don't think people do that here, well not in my experience anyway.
1) So true
ReplyDelete2) I know...what a bastard!
3) It was funny because it was such a sweet thing to do but she didn't even crack a smile!
